Letters of Support 3

Hi Steve --
I was very touched in reading about your efforts regarding the Coltrane House in The Long Islander. I had heard the Trane had lived in Dix Hills somewhere, but you've brought it to life.

This is precisely the sort of historical reference marker that the Town of Huntington should make every effort to not just preserve, but celebrate.

Coltrane was without doubt one of the most important influences in western music history ever. In my mind, he stands shoulder-to-shoulder with Beethoven, Ellington, Parker, Gershwin, Mozart. He should be celebrated and immortalized right here.

The house should be purchased. A museum erected, along with a cultural jazz foundation around it, with annual jazz events to help all of Long Island understand and appreciate the achievements of this giant of a musician and gentle giant of a man.

A collaboration of the several local colleges might further this effort. . A glorious fundraiser featuring several of the great living legends that played with Coltrane and other local musicians could take place. Dix Hills could finally find an important center of community and importance.

Dix Hills should celebrate its role in this musical heritage. Coltrane Day should be a special day in the District Five school system, if not the entire town. What better way to bring people of different cultures together than through music, and educate our youth as to their real heritage.

The Town should come together, proves its merits as an All American City, save this house and make Coltrane a centerpiece in its legacy.

Please keep up the great effort and let me know what I can do to assist in the process.

Please keep me posted,

Ron

Dear Sir,

I very strongly feel that John Coltrane's home should be turned into a memorial or museum or national monument. He is a true American and musical hero.

Sincerely,

Sir, in a country that does not have a Ministry of Culture it is up to the citizens and organisations to preserve landmarks and the ephrema of great artists for the historical education of it's future citizens. The preservation of the home of one of Americas greatest Jazz icons should be a no-brainer. It is up to the citizens to keep the memory of a country's great artist alive and well.

With this in mind I ask that the home of John Coltrane be preserved as a museum and guide to the legacy of this great man who has influenced many musicians all over the world.

Yours sincerely,
 Barrie Woodey

Please preserve the Coltrane homestead. It will appreciate in value, not only with regards to property value but also to historic cache. It will be far more valuable as it is than as a subdivision.

Thanks,
Dave Kostiner

I would like to take this time to ask you to please reconsider demolishing the former home of the jazz great John Coltrane. John Coltrane means a lot to American music and he should be honored by having his home turned into a jazz museum or memorial in which to honor his legacy. I'm sure there's a way to make the home into a profit-making business as well. Many people admire Coltrane's legacy and I would not be surprised if people made large donations to keep the building maintained. If the building is demolished, we will lose it forever. I'm sure the real estate value of the home as is will be greater than demolishing it and building something else. Thank you for reading this.

Sincerely,
Yoon Jae Lee, Conductor

Hi Steve,

Upon reading the article in the Half Hollows Hills newspaper, I have become very curious. I grew-up in Dix Hills and I lived very close to the Coltrane home. I found the article very interesting. I hope that your are able to save a piece of history and save a piece of land from just another home. Dix hills has too many homes.

Thank you,

Jeanmarie

Steve:

Thanks for your prompt response and all of your work in this noble effort. I contacted the National Trust for Historic Preservation and will report back to you what they say. I look forward to working with you on this!

Scott

I have just been told by a friend that there is a possiblility that by writing to you, you may be able to assist in saving the musician John Coltrane's house in Dix Hills. As you probably already know, John Coltrane had a very big impact on the music of his era. This particular house is where he was able to generate his most remarkable and outstanding recordings. It would be a cultural asset to the community to provide the opportunity to teach the legacy of Coltrane,. Please try to do what you can to save this landmark. Thank you, Lynne F. East Meadow, NY 11554
