Letters of Support 5

My name is Phil Bowler. I'm a professional musician as well as a broadcaster on WPKN FM out of Bridgeport, CT.

I recently received news of the purchase of John Coltrane's house, and wanted to express my concern that this home and the property it's on, be preserved as a national monument.

Mr. John Coltrane was one of America's greatest Music Giants in the 20th century!

As the US Congress has declared JAZZ, our nation's national treasure, I feel certain that this property would be considered a historic, treasure! People from around the world would want to visit this home for years to come. It is considered a shrine to those of us who love and cherish his life's work.

A fellow musician writes: "In Europe they made a national monument of Mozart's home and there are many other creative geniuses holding these honors.. these homes are shrines and are visited by people who have been captivated by the legends who lived and created their art in their sheltering walls..thank God they have done so to Louis Armstrong's home in Queens...Trane stands tall among the musical Giants..Bach, Bird, Mozart, Miles, Beethoven, Bud....", and others!

I concur!

PLEASE! DON'T DEMOLISH THIS HALLOWED GROUND!

Rather, I hope you'll find a way to preserve this home and the ground it's on, for us and the generation of fans, musicians, and historians, to come!

My heartfelt thanks for your time in hearing my plea!

Sincerely, Phil Bowler -

I’m interested in helping to preserve Trane’s home. Please let me know how I can help.

To Whom It May Concern:

John Coltrane is a milestone in American music, both creatively and culturally. To rid future generations of tangible history on this great music icon would prove to be a great mistake. I motion that you keep and preserve this music legend's home for all jazz and music lovers alike to enjoy. Giving Coltrane fans such as myself the privilige to walk in and see where and how Mr. John Coltrane lived would be an experience I would gladly make a journey to go and see many times. You have a very important decision to make, this is apparent, but this decision remains an opportunity for you to preserve the past and guarantee a legend. Thank you for your time.

A John Coltrane lover,

Brad Montesi

I read Stanley Crouch's column in yesterday's New York Daily News regarding John Coltrane's Huntington, Long Island, home with great interest. I certainly agree that the home is an important landmark and should be preserved and utilized for educational purposes. Please advise me of any efforts that are underway to prevent its demolition, and let me know how I might be able to get involved. I work at the New York State Museum in Albany, NY.

Thanks!

Pat W.

I applaud your unselfish efforts to preserve this important piece American music history.

Gene Corrado
